Somewhere, someone is eating a mango....
I love Salt Lake City. I do. Wow. I never thought I would say that. I spent three years hating Rexburg, Idaho, and I have been here for less than a month and already cannot get over how wonderful Salt Lake is. I know, I know, give it time, I will find something to hate, lol.
Every day I get out of work and I look out into the valley and just fall in love all over again. The museum is in the foothill area of Salt Lake, and it has the perfect view. We watch the sunset and get to see the city sparkling with lights at night. It is such a great place to work. I guess I love that because I love cities. Don't get me wrong, nature is beautiful. Every time I go hiking or on road trips and I see all the beautiful scenery I'm amazed by how much work God put into making our homes breathtaking. But I secretly love the city more.
I guess growing up in New Mexico, most people wouldn't think I have much to go off of, scenery wise. Trust me, I spent years complaining with all my friends about how ugly New Mexico was. We always joked that God created the world and then had some leftover stuff and just threw it in New Mexico... yeah. We were really mean. Haha. But the thing is, my senior year of high school we all realized just how beautiful New Mexico really is. I miss it like crazy. I love gravel front yards, with dirt, tumble weeds, and sagebrush making up the background. I also love the mountains. I do. I think New Mexico is the most beautiful place in the world. I love it there, and miss it every day.
But my favorite view growing up was never a hidden creek, or a field of grass, or even a snow covered mountain. Oh no. My favorite view was seen only when I was driving from Rio Rancho into Albuquerque. There is a hill that connects the two cities, and at night when one drives down that hill you can see the entire valley lit up. It is the most beautiful sight in the world, and gives me goosebumps whenever I see it.
Anyways, Salt Lake City has that same effect on me. I look out at the valley every night when I get out of work and it just gives me such a happy feeling... not quite the feeling I get when looking into Albuquerque, but close enough. I feel sooo lucky to live here, and work here. It is such a fun place, and I have met the greatest people.
People always say how close to God we can get when we are out in nature, away from the chaos of the city life, but I can always feel God's hand in the Earth when I see a city lit up at night. Why? Because it shows progress. It shows that even though there is so much turmoil in the world, with evil dictators, terrorists, disease, car accidents, etc., we have still not crumbled. We have continued to push forward. We are growing, mentally, and we are showing that growth. And it is all because of God and his great mercy on us. So, yes,I agree, it is nice to go out into nature and look up at the heavens and glory in the greatness of God. But, it is equally important to see the wonders around us today and think how blessed we are to live in a world where we can talk face to face with a brother in Maine while you are in Utah, or email a brother who is serving a mission in Florida and know that he will get it that day. Or even get a phone call from a nephew at 6:30 am when you are both in different states and hear him clearly :) And that is why I love seeing the city all lit up at night. It makes me realize that God loves me :)
