Team Napoleon... not Edward

I recently graduated from college. I majored in history and minored in humanities, so I read A LOT. And not just fun kid books, oh no, no. I read history books, classic novels, journal articles, newspaper articles.... the works. It was all educational. The months leading up to graduation I made a list of things I would do when I graduated. I swore I would read only "fun" books, meaning books that were not for an educational purpose. First thing I did when I got home from college was pick up the Twilight series. Those books got me through the summer after I graduated from high school, and I expected them to have the same soothing affect on me after college. I was so excited to read them again. I sat down, and started reading, and the book that I had first read in just one day took me almost two weeks to read. Two. Two whole weeks. I just couldn't get into them. I was so frustrated with myself. How could I not be into the Twilight books?! I ended up not finishing the series.

College ruined me, in a sense. I no longer care to talk about pointless things, or read nonsensical books. I want to learn more! I want to write more research papers. I want to go to class every day and discuss the effects of the Industrial Age on our Modern Day, or explain why Napoleon was such an influential man, or take apart The Illiad, or even, heaven forbid, write more case briefs. I miss being educated. I want to do something where I continue learning. I hate to admit this, but Bro. Williams was right. Education today is not what it was. We no longer go to learn, but to gain a career. Who majors in history anymore?

In the Ancient days, Philosophers were at the top of the societal chain. When all that changed, and people cared more for making money than educating their minds.... well... we all know what happened to Ancient Rome (or do we? I'm scared to ask people that). I'm worried about the world today. We seem to be continuing in that pattern. Has anyone heard of any history jobs today? What is a college education anymore? Why learn all those pointless facts if we never discuss things anymore except for the latest celebrity incident, or the newest movie release, or the football score.... It seems that we have become a very distracted society.

I guess I'm just frustrated with what the world has to offer in terms of a career. It seems that no one cares anymore about history, or educating the mind. As long as we have the business experience, or the computer experience, or the customer service experience, or as long as we know someone who works there, well, we get the job. What happened to the creative jobs? What happened to the new inventions? Oh, yes, we have the new IPads, or IPhones, or Google+... all things we NEED, right? Of course we are inventing! We are inventing new ways to distract us... and it is working.
