Save A Horse, Ride a Cowboy
I went to the rodeo for the first time last night. The only experience with rodeo's I had ever had before this had been in movies I had watched, and let me tell you, this experience was quite different from what any of those movies had depicted!
First of all, the rodeo was in Nephi. I live in Salt Lake, and so it took us a little more than an hour to get down there. It was a Church activity, so I got to drive down with a bunch of people from my ward. We had quite the adventure. We started in big city Salt Lake (haha) and ended up in the middle of no-where, also known as Nephi, Utah.
We took our seats under the big sheltered portion of the stands. I was grateful for this at the time because it was kind of sunny, and I did not want to be dripping sweat during the rodeo... little did I know that sweat would be the least of our problems...
The rodeo was awesome! It started off with a man parachuting out of an airplane carrying the American flag. How cool! Then all the activities started. It was awesome! All the horse riders and bull riders and other tricks were amazing! Also, Nephi is beautiful!
About half way through the rodeo, it started sprinkling. This was ok for my group, since we were under the shelter, but the rest of the people in the non-covered sections started pulling out their rain gear. The announcer promised us that it would not rain, and so we continued on watching with not much worry. The sprinkling subsided, and we took this as a sign that the announcer was right; it really wasn't going to rain!
But... he was wrong... dead wrong. One second we were watching a man wrestling a calf to the ground, and the next minute rain is pouring out of the heavens like a giant bowl of water being was tipped over and falling on us. Everyone in the uncovered parts of the stands took off. The rest of us pushed in to make room for more people to sit under the sheltered part of the stands. We thought we would be safe if we were under the shelter, but it turns out the rain had a different plan. The rain decides to come down side ways and we end up getting soaked under the shelter! It was crazy! We had an umbrella and were trying to cover ourselves, but it was not working. I was soaked. The rain poured down in sheets for what felt like 30 minutes... it was probably only ten... and then it just stopped. The place was muddy and the people in the rodeo were soaked, but they had continued performing and doing amazing tricks the entire time! When the rain stopped they continued on as if nothing had happened. It was crazy! I took a picture of the rain, but since my phone sucks it didn't turn out that well... but you can kind of see it here:
I know! Crazy sauce! After that, the rest of the rodeo went smoothly, and we ended by walking around the carnival afterwards and riding some of the rides.
Overall, the experience was awesome! I have never been caught in a rainstorm like that before, and it was all anyone could talk about at Church today! Also, I think I might be turning a little country on you guys. I know! I've always been a big city girl... but last night was so much fun! I don't know... I think Idaho and Utah are getting to me, haha, because I'm starting to think it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if I ended up living in the country... or at least visiting every once and a while!
